Surviving A Long Distance Marriage

It is pretty simple to understand that being married is extremely hard because there just is never anything simple about it. There is a lot to learn about marriage and even some people who have made it through thirty or so years may tell you they really do not know how they did it. So since your typical marriage is hard enough as it is, having a long distance marriage can make it even harder. It is really suggested that you do not enter a long distance marriage if you can avoid it because it is best that the two of you are together in order to have the best shot at making it.

But for most people, a long distance marriage was never a problem because it simply did not exist for them. They lived together happily enough but then suddenly things changed and they were now diving head first into a long distance marriage with a lot of confusion and emotions that really need dealt with properly. The problem could be that the husband's or wife's employer sent them to the other side of the country or maybe even to an a completely different country for a year or so. Depending on their personal situation such as having children, it may not be possible for the other spouse to follow.

How to Get Through It

The key to surviving any marriage is communication and this is certainly a fact for a long distance marriage as well. In fact, there probably needs to be more communication in a long distance marriage because you have to make up for not being right there for each other. Try everything you can to make sure that you make visual contact with each other such as using a web cam to communicate. Make sure that you are talking a lot about your feelings and what is happening in your every day lives so that it is not two completely different lives being led.

All in all, it really comes down to how committed both people are to making their long distance marriage work. If there is not a lot of work being put into it, then it is more likely to fail and that is not because of the distance between the two people, but because of their individual lack of concern to make it work. If you are really set on keeping your long distance marriage together, then talk with each other, keep in touch on a daily basis, and seek the advice of a professional if need be. Do whatever you have to do to make sure that the two of you make it through okay so that you can actually be together again.
