UH Update

Case Keenum Update:

Kevin Sumlin had a chance to sit down with Case Keenum and his father Sunday evening.  Nothing has been determined about Case's future just yet.  Case is rehabbing his knee to prepare for surgery.  Realisticly, if Keenum wants to go pro, he may need to come back next year, because his knee probably will not be recuperated before late March or April.  However, if he wants to come back for a 6th year, Case would have to enroll in more classes. (He's only taking 1 hour this semester.)

Here are a couple of notes from the loss to UCLA.

#1 The Cougars lost Justin Johnson to injury on the opening kickoff.  That eliminated the teams ability to run any multiple tight end sets.  The Cougars have one other TE on the roster.  When Johnson went down, the Cougars could no longer use their "under center" personnel packages.  Johnson is also their designated pass protection back.  I was not aware that in college football, you are not allowed to declare a lineman eligible like you can in the NFL.  Essentially, you can put another OL out there as a TE, but he is not an eligible receiver, which basicly means the defense only has to account for 4 people touching the football.

#2 That was not suppose to be an onside kick up 3-0.  The Cougars had scouted UCLA's KO return and noted that they had a hole in their formation where the only player within the zip code of the hole was a reserve DL.  The kicker had practiced all week long a short pop-up kick that was intended to land in the hole at about the 30 yard line.  Presumably, a pile-up would have happened and at worst UCLA would have had the ball at the 30 yard line.  The kicker simply failed to execute the play.

#3 Sumlin said he kicked the FG on 4th and 11 down 31-10 because he wanted Broadway to feel positive about the conclusion of his performance.

#4 There was some discussion that Case Keenum had checked out of a run play on the interception that ultimately got him hurt.  I specificly asked Kevin Sumlin that question, and he said the pass was the called play.  They have scored on the same play twice this season.

Bryce Beall told me that both QB's took 50/50 reps in Monday's practice.  He likes both freshman.  He went into more detail about Piland and what he brings to the table.  He called him a Case Keenum clone.  Bryce said that the offense has a small chip on its shoulder because he thinks people might be writing them off without Case.
